Ukraine has launched yet another daring strike against Russia — this time beneath the sea. In a dramatic escalation of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) carried out an underwater sabotage operation on the Crimean Bridge, detonating approximately 1100 kilograms of explosives beneath the structure.
The Security Service of Ukraine has announced a new strike on the Crimean Bridge as part of a “new unique underwater operation.” According to the SBU statement, the operation lasted several months. SBU agents allegedly planted explosives on the bridge’s supports, laying the equivalent of 1,100 kilograms of TNT. “The operation took several months. SBU agents planted explosives on the supports of this illegal structure. And today, at 4:44 a.m., without any civilian casualties, the first explosive device was detonated,” the statement says. It is also claimed that SBU head Vasyl Maliuk personally oversaw and coordinated the planning of the operation.
This strategically planned underwater attack targeted the submerged support pillars of the bridge, which is a vital supply and transport link between mainland Russia and the Crimean Peninsula. The bridge, considered a flagship infrastructure project of Russian President Vladimir Putin, comprises separate lanes for road and rail traffic and spans across the Kerch Strait, connecting the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov.

Ukrainian authorities revealed that the operation took months of meticulous planning. Following the detonation, road traffic across the bridge was temporarily suspended. The attack marks a significant shift in Ukraine’s asymmetric warfare strategy, utilizing high-precision sabotage to strike deeply at Russia’s logistical backbone.
This isn’t the first time the Crimean Bridge has come under attack. It was previously targeted in 2022 and again in 2023. However, the latest underwater explosion represents a new level of tactical innovation and resolve on the part of Ukraine’s forces. By targeting the bridge’s submerged structure, Kyiv has managed to threaten the very foundation of one of Russia’s most critical military supply routes into southern Ukraine.
The timing of this assault is also strategic. It comes just days after Ukraine reportedly carried out an air raid on Russian airbases, targeting nuclear-capable strategic bombers. Ukrainian officials claimed that the drone-led strike damaged approximately 7 billion dollars worth of Russian aircraft stationed at four different airbases located deep within Russian territory. Unverified video footage showed flames and thick black smoke billowing from the bombers.
These two attacks — the underwater sabotage on the Crimean Bridge and the drone strike on Russian airbases — send a clear signal of Ukraine’s intent to escalate the conflict and disrupt Russian military logistics at scale.
Meanwhile, Russia has yet to issue an official response regarding the bridge explosion. However, Russian investigators have blamed Ukraine for another recent incident: the derailment of a passenger train in western Russia. The rail bridge blast led to the deaths of at least seven people and injured many more. Russia’s investigative committee has claimed that the derailment was a terrorist act orchestrated by agents operating under the command of the Ukrainian government, accusing Kyiv of designing the attack with precision to inflict mass civilian casualties.
As Ukraine intensifies its military pressure on Russian assets, these developments underline a new phase of the war — one that is marked by high-impact, deep-strike operations that challenge Russia’s logistical and military strongholds across land, air, and now even undersea domains.
With Ukraine preparing for ceasefire talks with Moscow, these bold actions could be strategic moves meant to alter the negotiating table dynamics. For now, the conflict appears to be entering a more unpredictable and dangerous phase.
