China Speaks on Ghana Ties, Warns on Ukraine, Reacts to Trump, and Watches Afghanistan Closely
At the regular press conference held on July 4, 2025, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning addressed a series of significant global issues, providing insight into China’s foreign policy stance and diplomatic engagements.
The session began with a question from Xinhua News Agency about the 65th anniversary of China-Ghana diplomatic ties. Mao Ning emphasized Ghana’s special place in China’s diplomatic history, noting that it was one of the first sub-Saharan African countries to establish relations with China and the first to receive a visit from a Chinese leader.
Over the last 65 years, the two nations have built a robust relationship characterized by deep political trust and practical cooperation across various sectors. In 2024, both countries upgraded their ties to a strategic partnership. Mao stated that China is committed to working with Ghana to deepen traditional friendship, expand practical cooperation, and enhance coordination in international affairs to bring more tangible benefits to the peoples of both countries.
A Bloomberg reporter raised concerns about reports that China had canceled some events of the upcoming two-day EU-China Summit. Mao responded by noting that 2025 marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between China and the European Union. She affirmed that both parties are in close communication and jointly preparing for the summit, though she did not confirm the reported cancellations.
El Pais inquired about claims that China does not want to see a Russian defeat in Ukraine due to concerns that the U.S. might then shift its strategic focus entirely onto China. Mao Ning reiterated China’s consistent and objective stance on the Ukraine conflict.
She emphasized that China is not a party to the conflict and supports negotiation, ceasefire, and peaceful resolution. According to Mao, China will continue working constructively with the international community, guided by the will of the concerned parties, to facilitate a political settlement.
On the issue of Afghanistan, AFP asked for China’s position following Russia’s recognition of the Taliban-led Afghan government. Mao welcomed the development in Russia-Afghanistan relations and reaffirmed China’s long-standing friendship with Afghanistan. She highlighted that China believes Afghanistan should not be isolated from the global community.
China supports constructive engagement with the Afghan interim government and encourages it to respond to international concerns, contribute to regional peace and development, and counter terrorism. Mao added that diplomatic relations between China and Afghanistan have remained uninterrupted, and China continues to support cooperation in multiple fields.
AFP also brought up a recent statement by U.S. President Donald Trump, who announced plans to send letters to countries identifying potential U.S. import tariffs. Mao refrained from commenting on specific policies but reiterated that there are no winners in trade wars. She expressed hope that the U.S. and China will work together to implement the common understandings reached during recent high-level discussions and promote the healthy and sustainable development of bilateral economic ties.
Finally, Reuters asked about reports that the U.S. has allowed GE Aerospace to resume jet engine shipments to China’s COMAC. Mao directed the inquiry to the relevant authorities, offering no further comment.
The press conference underscored China’s commitment to stable and constructive global engagement, strategic partnerships, and peaceful resolutions to international conflicts, while also signaling a careful diplomatic approach to evolving geopolitical dynamics.
