Ukraine Targets Key Russian Airbase:Ukraine has launched a powerful airstrike deep inside Russia, targeting a key airbase in the Wunes region. The strike reportedly damaged advanced Russian fighter jets and munitions depots. This came after Russia unleashed its largest drone attack on Ukraine, escalating tensions just as President Trump and President Zelensky discussed peace, air defense, and joint weapons production.

In a dramatic escalation, both Russia and Ukraine have launched fresh waves of airstrikes, intensifying the conflict even as US President Donald Trump steps up efforts for a negotiated peace. Ukraine has claimed a major success in its latest assault, reportedly striking deep inside Russian territory and targeting one of the Kremlin’s most important air bases.

According to Ukrainian sources, the target was the Boris Obless air base in the Wunes region—home to some of Russia’s most advanced fighter jets. Ukraine claims that the strike damaged SU-34s, SU-35s, and SU-30SM jets. Beyond that, a depot storing glide bombs, training aircraft, and possibly other key military equipment was also reportedly hit. Moscow has yet to officially respond to these claims.

The Ukrainian strike was seen as a direct response to one of the largest drone attacks Russia has launched to date. Overnight, Moscow sent a massive swarm of 322 drones into Ukrainian territory. The attack resulted in four deaths and at least 37 injuries. According to Ukraine’s air force, 157 of the drones were shot down, while 135 others were likely neutralized by electronic warfare systems.

This violent exchange comes just days after Friday’s massive Russian assault on Kiev, the largest aerial offensive since the war began. That attack left one person dead and injured dozens more, reigniting fears of a deeper, deadlier escalation in the conflict.

The timing of these attacks is especially significant as it closely follows a high-stakes phone call between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and US President Donald Trump. Zelensky described the conversation as “very important,” emphasizing discussions around strengthening Ukraine’s air defense capabilities and the potential for joint weapons production with the United States.

“We agreed to arrange a meeting between our teams to strengthen air defense capabilities,” Zelensky said. “We had an in-depth discussion about joint production—something both us and the United States need.”

President Trump echoed the sentiment, calling it a “very good call.” However, when pressed on whether peace was within reach, Trump admitted, “I don’t know. I can’t tell you whether or not that’s going to happen.”

Trump also discussed the potential delivery of Patriot air defense missiles to Ukraine and the imposition of new sanctions on Russia. Regarding sanctions, Trump remarked, “We talk about sanctions a lot… he [Putin] understands that it may be coming. He’s a professional. He’s not thrilled with it, but he’s been able to handle sanctions. These are pretty biting.”

Zelensky Tweeted:

It was a rocky start to the day, with more than 500 Russian attack drones and missiles. Difficult, but a significant number were shot down. Interceptor drones demonstrated important performance today and we are scaling this up to the hilt. Today marks an important decision in Europe — in Denmark — our first agreement on weapons production for Ukraine in Europe. Coproduction between Ukraine and Denmark. This is paramount both in terms of security and investment.

While US military aid to Ukraine remains partially on hold due to domestic political wrangling, European allies are now scrambling to fill the gap. Meanwhile, Kiev is accelerating efforts to scale up its domestic defense industry to withstand the long war of attrition.

As peace talks stall and diplomacy hits repeated dead-ends, the battlefield continues to expand—from the skies over Kiev to the airbases nestled deep within Russian borders. The latest cycle of strikes underscores the growing scale, sophistication, and ferocity of a war that is nowhere near its end.
