Moscow hosted the 7th regular meeting of the Moscow Format of Consultations on Afghanistan, where Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held discussions with Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi. The talks focused on the ongoing situation in Afghanistan and regional stability amid a complex global environment.

In his opening remarks, Lavrov welcomed Minister Muttaqi and expressed appreciation for his participation in the dialogue. He acknowledged the challenging geopolitical situation in the region and beyond, stating that the world was not becoming simpler but that efforts toward stability in Afghanistan were visible.

According to Lavrov, relevant UN bodies have also acknowledged a significant reduction in areas cultivated with narcotic plants, marking a key achievement in the country’s anti-drug campaign.

The Russian Foreign Minister reiterated Moscow’s continued interest in providing comprehensive support to Afghanistan in several key areas — including the fight against terrorism, drug trafficking, and organized crime. He also underlined Russia’s willingness to assist Afghanistan in rebuilding a normal and peaceful life for its people.

Lavrov highlighted that a number of agreements and complementary documents have already been signed between the two nations to strengthen cooperation. He expressed hope that his meeting with Muttaqi would further advance discussions on these initiatives, deepening collaboration between Russia and Afghanistan in the shared pursuit of stability and development.
