Just days after receiving praise at a White House farewell ceremony, Elon Musk launched a scathing attack on President Donald Trump’s latest budget proposal. Taking to his social media platform X, Musk labeled the bill “a disgusting abomination,” warning it would “massively increase the already gigantic budget deficit.”

At the center of the controversy is Trump’s push to extend his 2017 tax cuts, while ramping up spending on military expansion, border security, and immigration enforcement. Trump has dubbed it the “big beautiful bill,” urging Republican senators to swiftly pass the measure.

Elon Musk says on X: “I’m sorry, but I just can’t stand it anymore. This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination. Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it.”

While these priorities remain popular among conservatives, the financial implications have sparked fierce debate. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates the bill would balloon the U.S. deficit by $3.8 trillion over the next decade. That has set off alarm bells, even among some of Trump’s usual allies.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune responded to Musk’s criticism, downplaying the fiscal alarm. “It will ultimately save more money than it spends,” Thune claimed. “You will see a reduction, not an increase in the deficit. So, we have a difference of opinion. He’s entitled to that opinion.”

Opposition to the bill is unanimous among Senate Democrats, primarily due to its proposed cuts to social safety net programs. The legislation includes reductions to Medicaid, which provides health care for over 20 million low-income Americans, including the elderly and disabled. As a result, millions are expected to face higher healthcare costs.

The bill narrowly passed the House of Representatives in May, squeaking through by just one vote. Now in the Senate, it cannot afford to lose more than three Republican votes if it’s to survive. That precarious math has amplified tensions within the GOP itself.

One vocal critic is Senator Rand Paul, a staunch fiscal conservative. “I like the president. I supported the president,” Paul said. “In fact, I’m for the tax cuts. I am for a lot of the bill. But I can’t in good conscience give up every principle that I stand for—and that’s that we can’t accumulate more debt.”

Other moderate Republicans have also expressed unease, especially over the steep healthcare cuts. With conflicting demands from different factions within the GOP, and mounting pressure from Trump to have a budget signed before the July 4th holiday, the bill’s future remains uncertain.

This clash highlights the broader struggle within the Republican Party: how to balance tax cuts and national security with responsible fiscal policy and social obligations. And with Elon Musk now vocally entering the fray, the debate has gained a high-profile new dimension.
